EVIDENCE AND METHOD IN THE SCIENCES:
LOGICAL, SOCIAL, AND WORLDLY DIMENSIONS

30 hour-course, 1 hour credit, 2 ECTS points

May 14-19, 2007

MONDAY - SATURDAY, 9.30-12.30

room GG-212

Summary:
Neither the narrowly logical understanding of science offered
by the Old Deferentialists, nor the purely social
understanding offered by the New Cynics, will do.

The Critical Common-sensist account of evidence and method
in the sciences
-- which combines logical
and social dimensions, and adds another: the world
-- is more adequate both to the successes
of the sciences, and to their failures.

The Integrity of Science:

What It Means,

Why It Matters

May 18 (Friday)

17.00, room GG-213

 Summary:

This lecture will focus primarily on integrity in the sense
of "firm adherence to values," and how this concept applies to science qua institution.
The first step will be to identify and articulate the most relevant values
-- the epistemological values of evidence-sharing and respect for evidence
-- and show how they are rooted in the goals of the scientific enterprise;
the next, to explore the circumstances that presently threaten to erode commitment
to these core values;  and the last, to articulate why this erosion should concern us.
