APPLICATION OF THE BIG FIVE MODEL FOR THE PURPOSE OF SELECTED IN FIRE SERVICE

In 90th the increase in number of studies on usefulness of personality dimensions measurement in personnel selection procedures can be noticed. This interest in application of personality diagnosis in the area of personnel selection is a result of some meta-analysis that pointed out that personality dimensions appeared to the quite good predictors of job performance. Another fact influencing this tendency is the development of the Big Five Personality Factors concept by Costa & McCrae where non-pathologic categories are used for personality description. An adaptation of Neo-Five Factors Inventory (NEO-FFI) anables to use it in job selection procedures in Poland.
In the article, the results of validation study on tests battery for firefighters’ job selection are presented. An experimental test battery consists of tests measuring personality traits (NEO-FFI, Formal Characteristics of Behaviour-Temperament Inventory, Internal-External Locus of Control Scale) and abilities (Mechanical Reasoning, General Aptitude Test Battery). Obtained results pointed out that only Openness to Experience, from the Big Five Personality Factors, appeared to be a good prognostic of firefighters abilities test in prognosis of job performance very well. The authors, basing on own experience and literature review, recommend using NEO-FFI inventory in validation studies on test batteries for different jobs.
