Chair of Social Pedagogy was formed parallel to the re-activated, after a long break, Section of Pedagogy KUL, later re-named as Institute of Pedagogy KUL. A significant role in the process of formation of the fundaments of the Chair, since the 80's, has been played by W.F. Wawro, PhD and Łucja Badeńska MA. In co-operation with Professor Zofia Ostrihańska they have undertaken a lot of research on the role of social environment in education and formation and on the social conditions of adolescents' development and their problems in social functioning. In a later period Prof. Z. Matulka and Prof. E. Mazurkiewicz worked in the Chair, who did research on social organisations and associations, co-operative institutions, diagnostics of functioning of the social environment and institutions of social support, also on problems of social projects.

During 2005 - 2007 period, under the leadership of Prof. dr hab. Henryk Cudak, the staff of the Chair of social pedagogy realised two-ply research programme, based on two leading subjects: "Social and cultural conditions of functioning of educational and formative institutions and course and effects of the process of socialisation, education and formation" and " Social and cultural contexts of the condition and functioning of adolescents and activity of educational environments" (W. Wawro, R. Jusiak, K. Płeczkan). In the framework of these subjects multi-directional studies are realised, concentrated on adolescents in different social environments and institutions, that takes into account the dynamics of contemporary social and cultural background in a rich complex of the conditioning variables.

On the basis of these diagnoses very significant problems of social resourcefulness in the face of negative processes and phenomena were also undertaken. Examples of the issues analysed are among others: counselling,  different associations, communities and religion institutions and different forms of social and cultural animation directed especially towards the groups isolating themselves from the cultural context or socially disadvantaged.

In the present day our staff members research the following subjects:

  1. Adolescents' social and cultural potential and their valuing orientations  ( F. W. Wawro, PhD);

  2. Selected institutions and social and religious groups in the face of contemporary challenges (Roman Jusiak, PhD);

  3. Help and support in the face of contemporary protection needs (Klemens Płeczkan PhD);

  4. Dysfunctions in Polish families and their conditions (Łucja Badeńska, MA).

Achievements

Achievements of the Chair of Social Pedagogy might be located in several elementary areas: scientific monographs and other books and publications, organisation of scientific sessions and symposiums, didactic and educational achievements and social and cultural initiatives

The most valuable publications of recent years are: Wanda Franciszka Wawro "Młodzież w kontekście formowania się nowoczesnych społeczeństw" (Adolescents in the context of the formation of contemporary societies), Lublin 2004; Franciszka Wanda Wawro Problemy współczesnej  młodzieży w ujęciu nauk społecznych (Problems of contemporary adolescents formulated by social sciences), Wydawnictwo Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego. Lublin 2007; Młodzież a kultura życia w kontekstach społecznych, (Adolescents and culture of life in social contexts) Wydawnictwo Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego,  Lublin 2008.

Chair of Social Pedagogy has organised so far five scientific conferences:

  1. Młodzież a kultura (Adolescents and culture), in 1999, in co-operation with Koło Naukowe Studentów Pedagogiki KUL (Students of Pedagogy KUL Scientific Circle);

  2. Młodzież w kontekście procesów formowania się nowoczesnych społeczeństw (Adolescents in the context of the formation of contemporary societies), in 2003 (in co-operation with Institute of Sociology of Marie Curie - Skłodowska University and Koło Naukowe Studentów Pedagogiki KUL (Students of Pedagogy KUL Scientific Circle);

  3. Paidagogas dzisiaj (Contemporary pedagogues), in 2004;

  4. Pedagog wobec zjawiska  marginalizacji  młodzieży (Pedagogue in the face of the adolescents' marginalisation phenomenon, in 2005;

  5. Pedagog - filozofia i kultura życia (Pedagogue - philosophy and culture of life), in  2006.

Chair of Social Pedagogy systematically organises seminars during which the discussions are undertaken on the organisation and analysis of the research effects.

The staff has also been engaged in editorial boards of different scientific journals, for example, „Roczniki Nauk Społecznych, zeszyt Pedagogika" (Annals of Social Sciences, vol. 2 Pedagogy) (Rev. R. Jusiak).  They also perform social duties for the students, e.g. F. W. Wawro PhD has been a curator of Students of Pedagogy KUL Scientific Circle and Ł. Badeńska MA and Father R. Jusiak PhD have performed the duties of the students' age-groups curators for the whole 5 year study period. Staff members also are engaged in different social, cultural and educational activities, e.g. Łucja Badeńska MA with the students systematically participates in the action " Dar Czasu i Serca" (A gift of time and heart), for elderly and lonely citizens of Lublin, and in the work of the Uniwersytet Trzeciego Wieku (University of the Third Age).

Didactic and research engagement of the staff members manifests also in their active participation in scientific sessions organised by different academic centres both in Poland and abroad and in lecturing at other universities.
