CHILDHOOD AMNESIA. WHY DON’T WE REMEMBER OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD?

Summary. This article discusses childhood amnesia. Three hypotheses explaining this phenomenon are considered: the psychoanalytic hypothesis, the neurophysiological hypothesis and the cognitive hypothesis, These hypotheses are discussed in the framework of the literature on memory development. According to this author, the offset of childhood amnesia is not caused by qualitative changes in memory development but is
a function of the child’s cognitive development in such areas as perception, language, thought processes and cognitive sense of self.
