COPING WITH STRESS CAUSED BY DIFFERENT HEALTH HAZARD

Beata Basińska

This paper is aimed at presenting coping strategies and the sense of coherence in women in different health condition. Participants were healthy women (n=79), cancer threatened ones (n=41) and women withg gynaecological cancer (n=118). The results show that in health deficit condition, emotion-focused coping is preferred, but in health condition, problem-focused strategies are used. Threat devaluation strategies predominate in cancer disease situation, while positive reappraisal is preferred by healthy and cancer threatened women. The sense of coherence is lowered in the situation of uncertainty in comparison to unambigous health condition. The sense of coherence and ways of coping with threat undertaken during the course of treatment has no influence on the length of survival time in women with gynaecological cancer.
