HOW PARENTS STRESS MORALITY AND COMPETENCE
IN SOCIALIZATION OF BOYS AND GIRLS

Abstract. Parents responses to their children's behavior construable both in moral and
competence-related categories were searched in two studies. The hypothesis of
gender-typed socialization (greater stress on moral categories in socialization of girls,
greater stress on competence-related categories in socialization of boys) received support
in neither of the studies. Instead, both mothers and fathers stressed moral rather than
competence-related aspects of behavior of both boys and girls (morality dominance
hypothesis). The discussion relates the results to the growing body of research suggest-
ing that parents may be not a primary source of socialization.
