Abstract. Prom the perspective of dynamical social psychology, the experience of coordi-
nation between two individuals facilitates the formation of positive social relations
(Nowak & Yallacher, 1998). This hypothesis, however, has not been submitted to empir-
ical test. The aim of this paper is an empirical verification of the hypothesis that coor-
dination promotes the formation of positive attitudes among interaction partners. To
test this idea, participants believed they were playing a computer game with a partner.
The objective of the game was to navigate an airplane around obstacles. In reality, each
participant interacted with a computer program. The degree of coordination between
the participant and the program was systematically manipulated (high vs. low coordina-
tion) with regard to either an important aspect for the task (movement) or an unimpor-
tant aspect (changes of color). Results demonstrated that coordination with respect to
the important aspect (movement) led to more positive evaluation of the partner, but
coordination with respect to an unimportant aspect did not affect the evaluations. The
results thus provide support for the hypothesis. We also analyzed the time required to
complete the task. Results revealed that time did not reliably differ as a function of
coordination, suggesting that the effects of coordination on evaluation are not due to
task difficulty. The results in general confirm the basic model of coordination dynamics
(Nowak, Yallacher; 1998; Nowak, Yallacher, Zochowski, 2002). The present results
demonstrate, however, that coordination contributes to positive interpersonal evaluation
in general, rather than being restricted to close relations (as emphasized in the Nowak,
Yallacher, 1998 model). This research also modifies the original model by Nowak and
Yallacher (1998) by demonstrating that only the coordination with respect to important
matters affects interpersonal evaluation.
