INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES IN NEED COGNITIVE CLOSURE

Abstract. The article describes construct of the need for cognitive closure and the scale
to measure individual differences in this cognitive motivation. The structure of the scale
were analyzed on a student (N=340) and adult (N=374) samples. The results revealed
that four of the five original NFC dimensions (preference for order, predictability, dis-
comfort with ambiguity and closed mindedness could be explained by one latent se-
cond-order factor. Decisiveness seems to be independent. The validation studies, includ-
ing „known-groups" discrimination between populations assumed to differ in their need
for closure, and discriminant validation with respect to related personality measures
were conducted on a student sample (N=275). The results suggest The Need for Closure
Scale is a reliable and valid measure of the cognitive motivation.
