J. Lekan, JESUS CHRIST, THE MEDIATOR OF SALVATION. A UNIVERSALIST VISION OF SPANISH THEOLOGY

Summary

It is a reflection based on a monograph entitled “Jesus Christ, the Mediator of Salvation in Spanish Post-Conciliar Theology.” The author attempts not only to present the contents of a view of the salutary mediation of Jesus Christ, but also to emphasise universal elements found in the vision of a particular theology – the Spanish one in this case. The first step is sketching the theological and historical context in which the theology in question was created. It is an open theology of European nature, based on the sources of solid biblical and patristic foundations. The concept of soteriology appears key in understanding the essence of Christ’s salutary mediation. From the post-conciliar reflection of Spanish theologians emerges a multi-faceted image of Christ, the Mediator. The most important aspects thereof are: ontological identity of the Mediator; necessity of being the real human. His mediation is internally trinitarian and eschatological, “pro-existential”, universal and unifying, direct. It is the only type of mediation consisting of two phases: descending and ascending. When it comes to its realisation, three functions of Christ’s salutary mediation are to be distinguished, namely: royal, prophetic, and pastoral. To sum it up, the subject appears to be rich and multiaspectual. It enables us to spot the process of the development of the current Spanish christology, but, above all, the significance of this subject for christology, and not only for Spanish soteriology, but also in the universal dimension.
