LAY UNDERSTANDING OF MORALITY: FIVE ETHICAL CODES AND THEIR MEASUREMENT

Summary. Based partially on theories of Richard Shweder and Max Weber we hypothe-sized that lay understanding of the moral domain is underlain by five ethical codes: ethic of autonomy, ethic of community, ethic of common good, ethic of dignity, and ethic of productivity. A series of studies showed that moral relevance of (verbally described) nearly 400 behavioural acts was underlain by three ethical codes: autonomy, common good and dignity, whereas the two remaining codes influenced neither direct ratings of nor indirect indices of moral relevance of behaviour. A Polish national sample results showed that only three first ethical codes were endorsed to a higher degree by women then men. A questionnaire measuring endorsement of each of the five ethical codes was presented.
