LAY UNDERSTANDING OF MORALITY:
STUDIES ON PSYCHOLOGICAL REALITY OF ETHICAL CODES OF DIGNITY AND PRODUCTIVITY

Summary. Ethic of dignity and ethic of productivity were compared in of five studies (total N = 665 university students). Study 1 showed that transgressions of the dignity code instigated a higher disapproval than transgressions of the productivity code. Stu-dies 2 and 3 showed that only declared adherence to the dignity code predicted ways of solving decisional dilemma (were one decision was consistent with the dignity code but inconsistent with the productivity code and the opposite was true for the second decision). Studies 3 showed that priming of the dignity (but not the productivity) code influenced significantly the way in which the dilemmas were solved. Study 4 found that priming increased the declared adherence to the dignity but not the productivity code. Finally, Study 5 showed that thinking about one's own death increased the declared adherence to the dignity but not the productivity code. We conclude that only the code of dignity functions as a truly moral code, whereas the productivity has no moral rele-vance for participants of our studies.
