MODESTLY OR ASSERTIVELY? THE LEVEL OF STUDENTS SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT AND STYLE OF SELF-PRESENTATION AS DETERMINANTS OF FEMALE TEACHERS' ATTITUDE TOWARDS STUDENTS

Abstract. In a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 experiment, the interpersonal effectiveness of the „modest"
and „boasting" styles of self-presentation was verified. The female teachers (N=601
participating in the experiment, received a set of information about four imaginary
students. On the basis of received information, the teachers were to evaluate the
students' intellectual level, their social adaptation abilities, their possible future
achievements and relationship to other students (7-degree scales), as well as were asked to rank the students "from the best to the worst one". Half of the teachers were set in the role of a decision-maker (selection of students to a class with a special extended programme), and the other half- in the role of the observer (opinion about each of the students). Half of the participants estimated the female students, and the other half the male students. The students' school achievement information (average versus high and the self-presentation style (modest versus boasting) were manipulated within-subjects. Students of higher school achievements were better evaluated than those of average achievements. Those representing the „boasting" self-presentation style were also better seen than those who went for the „modest" self-presentation, but the self-presentation effect was stronger in the conditions of average school achievements as compared to the lower achievements. The „boasting" self-presentation students went higher in the ranking made by the decision-makers, than in the ranking made by the observers. Generally, tle experiment indicated the limited universality of the „modesty principle" as a determinant of the interpersonal self-presentation effectiveness in the teacher-student relation.
