Social Work in Europe – State of the Art and Future Challenges

Dear Friends,

With great pleasure we would like to inform you that this month a book was published, Social Work in Europe – State of the Art and Future Challenges, edited by Marian Nowak and Ewa Domagała-Zyśk.

So far we used to call it “The Spring Academy Book”, as its content is closely connected with this event. This publication includes eleven chapters, each written by the Professors  who participated in Spring Academy 2008 in Lublin. There is a plan of our meeting included, some nice photos and a list of participants – and your name is also definitely on the list! What we are really proud of, it is a Multilingual Dictionary of Social Work that is also a part of the book: the keywords of each lecture are provided in English, German, Turkish, Slovak, Finnish, Swedish, Spanish and Polish!

One copy of the book has been sent to each of the participating universities. However, if you wish to have  your own copy, it is available at the price of 12 Euros (plus postage). Write to ewadom@kul.pl

With warm greetings

Ewa Domagała-Zysk & Marian Nowak

Weather:

Dear participants!
We try to organise everything really well but the weather seems to be
uncontrolled:( It is rather cold here these days, so please remember to

Dear students, participants of Autumn Seminars 2008 in Lublin!

First of all we would like to thank you for your registration and your wish to come to Lublin and take part in Autumn Seminars. This Erasmus Intensive Program is going to take place in Lublin from 12 - 22 November 2008. As you probably know it is a renewal program (second edition) of Spring Academy 2008 that took place at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin on 31 March - 12 April 2008. The general structure of it is the same, but it differs a lot in details, so we urge you very much to check the web site and ask question if only you are uncertain about any aspect of it.

Both the co-ordinators and the participants create this event and in order to be successful we need this mutual co-operation very much. Here is some very important information about your participation:

  1. Please check the plan of Academy that is placed on our web site. As you see, the participation is going to be a very active one: Each day you are going to take part in seminars, field visits and social work presentations. We hope you will enjoy our social events too - be prepared to be also organisers of them, especially the evening sessions!

  2. For attending the Academy you are going to get some ECTS points and to get them you need to take an active part in Academy. Three tasks are essential:

    • preparing for the seminars beforehand, reading the teaching materials placed on the website - the teachers are working on them now, they should appear soon
    • prepare  - as a national group - a project about social work system in your country. On our web site you will find some ideas as how to do it
    • attend the lectures, seminars and field visits while in Lublin

  3. Participation in projects like this means also that the participants take part in financing the course. The rule is that you will get back 70% (but not more than 200 Euros) of travel costs per person and it is necessary to pay an entrance fee of 60 Euros for the extra accommodation costs and travel costs in Lublin. We hope this sum will not create a barrier for any of the participants. Here in Lublin you will get a full accommodation (bed + three meals a day) so you will not have to pay any extra money.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask them - and start your preparations for Academy. We look forward to seeing all of you in Lublin!

Some ideas for preparing the presentation on social work issues in your country

One of the important points of Autumn Seminars is a presentation of social work issues in your country. Here are some ideas how to prepare it beforehand in order for the time here in Lublin to be as effective as possible:

  • You will have 45 minutes altogether for the presentation. A good idea is to divide this time into your presentation and time for discussion
  • Preparing a Power Point presentation, some materials for an overhead projector or a poster will definitely help you. Remember to include not only your opinions but also some fact and figures
  • It seems to be a good idea to use the following framework for the presentation:
  1. WHO a social worker is in your country? (what kind of education must they get, what skills and abilities should they possess, what is their social position and social expectations about their work )
  2. WHERE and with WHOM do social workers work? (who are the main target groups in your country, in what kind of institutions are social workers employed)
  3. HOW do social workers work? What are the most successful working methods? Can you give some examples of so called good practice?
  4. CHALLENGES: what are contemporary challenges for social workers in your country, especially connected with latest social and economical changes in European Union?
  5. VOLUNTEERING: to what extent do volunteers help in social work?

The above are of course only suggestions and you may add to it your own ideas. In case of any questions please ask them! We wish you all a happy time of preparation for Autumn Seminars 2008.
