PERCEIVING THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SIDES OF PATRIOTISM:

ON THE SELF-SCHEMA DISTINCTIVITY
AND THE COMPLEXITY OF THE EVALUATIVE STANDARDS

Abstract. The paper deals with the relationship between the self-schema distinctivity
and the cognitive standards of evaluation. The hypothesis predicted that the level of the
self-schema distinctivity correlates with the complexity of standards of reflective evalua-
tion. The paper presents the findings from two studies, both supporting the hypothesis:

the subjects with the relatively lowest level of the self-schema distinctivity perceived
mainly some positive aspects of patriotic attitudes, whereas those with the highest, level
of the self-schema distinctivity generated more numerous arguments - positive and
negative ones.
