SENSE OF COHERENCE AND DOPING STYLES: AN EMPIRICAL ATTEMPT TO DEFINE THE DIRECTION OR RELATIONSHIP.

The aim of the study was analyzed relationship between sense of coherence (SOC) and coping styles used by young people in difficult situations. An assumption was made that the relationship between the SOC and coping styles may be construed in two ways: (1) on the one hand, the SOC can determine the choice of coping strategies styles (2) on the other hand, experiences resulting from application of particular coping styles may shape the SOC.
A group (N = 1005) of students of the last grade of secondary vocational schools were examined using questionnaire techniques (the SOC-29 by A. Antonovsky an CISS by Endler and Parker). From this cohort 205 subjects were selected for re-examination at a 1-year follow-up.
An analysis of cross-lagged correlation suggest, that in this age group it is the coping styles that determine the SOC level, and not the other way round.
