The Silesian Quartet was founded in 1978 by the graduates of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. It developed its skills at the master classes conducted by the members of such quartets as the LaSalle, Amadeus, Juilliard, Smetana and Alban Berg. The Quartet's repertoire includes over 400 pieces of chamber music literature, of which almost 300 are by 20th and 21st-century composers. The Silesian Quartet premiered over 100 works by Polish and foreign composers, many of which have been dedicated to the ensemble.
In its career the quartet has given concerts attracting enthusiastic critical response in most European countries, as well as the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan and China. The Silesian Quartet has appeared at some of the world´s most prestigious concert venues including Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Vredenburg in Utrecht, De Unie in Rotterdam, De Singel in Antwerp, Schauspielhaus in Berlin, Tivoli in Copenhagen, Wigmore Hall in London, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Merkin Hall and Carnegie Hall and Symphony Space in New York, Jordan Hall in Boston, Bellas Artes in Mexico City. The ensemble has released over 40 CDs with music from various periods of time, although the musicians concentrate on recording works of the last three decades. Their recordings have been released for such labels as ECM, EMI, CD Accord, Radio Katowice. Three of them received famous ”Fryderyk” award for the best chamber music recording of the year (H.M.Górecki - Olympia 1995, K.Szymanowski/W.Lutosławski - CDAccord 1997, E.Chausson - Radio Katowice 2004). In 1993, the Silesian Quartet launched an annual chamber music festival held under the motto "Silesian Quartet and its guests". 20 editions of the festival have brought many distinguished artists from Poland and other countries to the most important concert halls of the whole region of Silesia.
