STRATEGIES OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION: THE ROLE OF THE NEED
FOR COGNITIVE CLOSURE AND CONFLICT SCHEMA

The study analyzes the relationship between the need for cognitve closure and conflict-strategy preferences among members of two political parties that differ with respect to their ‘conflict schema’ – consensual beliefs about the nature of social relations and prefered actions towards political opponent. It was expected that ‘conflict schema’ has a moderating effect on relationship between epistemic motivation and strategic choice in conflict. The results show that the high need for closure is related to preference of escalatory over conciliatory conflict resolution strategies. However, this relationship is significant only among members of the party with compatitive ‘conflict schema’ (Młodzież Wszechpolska). Cooperative ‘conflict schema’ of Młode Centrum neutralizes competitive tendencies related to the high need for closure.
