STRESS APPRAISAL IN TERMS OF CHALLENGE IN MI PATIENTS – AN ATTEMPT AT SYNTHESIS BASED ON EMPIRICAL DATA

The aim of the paper is to present the results of studies on one type of stress appraisal – stress appraisal in terms of challenge. The starting point of theoretical considerations was a critical analysis of the transactional theory of stress and coping by Lazarus and Folkman. The effect of this analysis is the interactional model of stress and coping that includes a new conceptualization of stress appraisal. This new approach distinguishes dispositional and situational stress appraisal.
In the paper an original questionnaire measuring stress appraisal is presented, as well as empirical data justifying the separation into two different kinds of appraisal in terms of challenge: “challenge-activity” and “challenge-passivity”. It was shown, that each of the mentioned types of challenge appraisal has a different impact on functioning.
Results of analyses seeking for some personality correlates that may be related to each of the distinguished types of dispositional appraisal in terms of challenge are also presented.
Conclusions drawn from the presented study concern a selected group of subjects, namely patients after their first myocardial infarction (MI), who participate in sanatorium rehabilitation. As it seems, verification of the obtained results in different groups of subjects may have a significant meaning for theory and practice.
