The need for Catholic education in todays Europe the Hungarian viewpoint

 

The role of the Catholic school seems more and more important in the secularized Europe of the XXI century, and even more so in its eastern part, where 40 years of the communist rule umcommonly hindered experiencing the two-thousand-year-old Christian and European traditions as well as raising and educating new generations in the Catolic spirit. In Hungary, after the change of the political system in 1989, the introduction of the right to freedom of conscience and religion became an event of utmost significance. It gave the grounds for the development of Catholic educational insitutions. The Hungarian law treats the Catholic and state schools in the same way. At present every seventh secondary school student attends a Catholic school. It is worth noting that four Catholic schools are ranked among the ten best schools in Hungary. However, Catholic schools in Hungary suffer from difficulties, both material and spiritual. The mental wounds caused by the communist system heal very slowly. The Catholic school is meant to prepare for responsibility, to shape the students personality and conscience, and by its very existence and activity - to give evidence of the truth, just as Christ did.

During his unforgettable pilgrimages to Poland Pope John Paul II addresssed teachers many times. In the specific solemnity of his moral exhortation to the nation were also contained the words of fatherly consideration and love addressed to Polish teachers. The Holy Father spoke to them during his fourth pilgrimage to the Fatherland from 1-9 June 1991. In the Włocławek Cathedral John Paul II formulated a brilliant synthesis of the problem of educating the young generation in the Catholic and national context. Family, school, the Church and Nation are according to the Pope - the four main actors engaged in the drama of proper upbringing and education of the young generation. The Holy Father referred in his speech to the momentous document of The Second Vatican Synod Declaration on Christian education which is a kind of summa of the Churchs thought on family and education in the richly outlined contemporary context.

Wyrazem tego jest wiele dokumentów jego autorstwa, spotkań, audiencji, wizyt. Główna myśl jaki przyświecała Ojcu Świętemu, była idea zjednoczenia narodów w duchu wiary. Podczas wizyty apostolskiej na Słowacji Jan Paweł II podjął tę kwestię wskazując na wielkie zasługi św. Cyryla i Metodego. Ważnym elementem działalności ekumenicznej było nawiżanie dialogu z judeizmem i islamem. W tym obszarze, można powiedzieć, Papież stał sie człowiekiem dialogu inadziei. Wielu widziało w Jego posługiwaniu nowy blask działalności ku zdjednoczeniu nardoów. Nie bez znaczenia nazwano Go Papieżem Prorokiem, który doprowadzi ludzkośc do podjęcia wspólnej drogi miłości człowieka opartej na miłości Chrystusowej.

In the article the author discusses the concept of moderation from many points of view. At first he presents the physical aspect of moderation and then he shows the issue from biblical and Church Fathers' perspectives moving to the ethical aspect. The article discusses theoretical and practical aspects of the issue. The article reads easily because its content has been presented in a clear way. Moderation has educational, therapeutic and regulatory dimensions and can be a virtue in many life spheres. It touches almost every aspect of human life. It is an essential element of correctness and ordinariness of human existence.

The Value of Personal Influence in the Formation of the Youth

 

Against the backdrop of the contemporary crisis of authorities and in view of the goal of Christian formation, the first part shows what it means to approach the example of Christ, his personal influence and paradigm, his model of values to be accepted. A personal example encourages us to imitation and identification. The young people need positive patterns, for they are often exposed to negative pressure, false heroes, and idols. The models undergo modifications. It has been emphasised that they are important in religious formation.
The second part depicts personal patterns from some textbooks for religious instruction in primary and secondary schools. Aside to Christ and Mary, they are mostly saints, the Polish blessed, and people with great authority, e.g. John Paul II.
The third part gives some samples of research on the personal patterns among the youth. Their sources have been shown, the most important values, the presence of negative patterns, variability of patterns, the demand for them, and their way of influence. The youth model of a model catechist has been shown here. The paper closes with a statement that verba docent, but exempla trahunt.

Część pierwsza ukazuje, na tle współczesnego kryzysu autorytetów ale i celu wychowania chrześcijańskiego, jakim jest zbliżenie do wzoru Chrystusa, czym jest wzór osobowy, jako model przyjęcia wartości. Wzór osobowy zachęca do naśladowania i identyfikacji. Młodzież potrzebuje pozytywnych wzorów, bo bywa poddawana presji negatywnych, fałszywych bohaterów i idoli. Wzory ulegają modyfikacjom. Podkreślono ważność wzorów w wychowaniu religijnym.
Część druga przedstawia wzory osobowe w wybranych podręcznikach katechetycznych dla szkoły podstawowej gimnazjum i liceum. Są to najczęściej, poza Chrystusem i Maryją, święci, błogosławieni polscy i osoby o dużym autorytecie, np. Jan Paweł II.
Część trzecia prezentuje próbki badań dotyczących wzorów osobowych młodzieży. Ukazano źródła tych wzorów, ich najważniejsze wartości, obecność wzorów negatywnych, zmienność wzorów, ich potrzebę i sposób oddziaływania. Pojawił się również młodzieżowy model wzorowego katechety. Artykuł zakończono stwierdzeniem, że „verba movent, ale exempla trahunt".

A teacher's authority is an important element of intellectual and spiritual pupil forming at all the levels of his education. For many years not only educationalists but also specialists in various fields of knowledge have dealt with this issue. Nowadays after the period of transformation this issue should be considered again. Many claim that there is no education without authority. Lately, a new model of a teacher's authority was suggested - a teacher as an inspirander (initiator). Its structure is based on three main elements: person, knowledge and faith. The thesis that there is no authentic authority without Christian values is proposed.

W kulturze hebrajskiej dzieci były błogosławieństwem dla rodziny i narodu. Respekt wobec dzieci i uwaga im poświęcana wyrastały z przekonania, że Izrael został powołany do głoszenia specjalnej misji i dlatego należało robić wszystko, aby się rozwijał i rosło jego znaczenie w historii. Wychowaniem dzieci zajmowali się głównie rodzice. Ojciec miał nauczyć syna rzemiosła a matka miała zająć się wychowaniem córek. Do wychowywania dzieci zobowiązane były także świątynia i pałac królewski. Głównym celem wychowywania dzieci było nauczenie ich czci wobec Boga Jahwe i rodziców. Stosunek dzieci do rodziców był postrzegany jako sprawdzian znajomości dekalogu. Główny nacisk pedagogiki hebrajskiej skierowano na wzmocnienie możliwości poznawczych i moralnych. Według ksiąg madrościowych, wychowanie było ciągłym wysiłkiem, który wymagał od rodziców i innych instytucji wychowawczych wytrwałości i inteligencji, a ze strony dzieci otwartości na słuchanie.

A present teacher should be prepared to work with pupils in such a way that he could fulfill many functions simultaneously. A present pupil, often left alone by his parents, is not deprived of difficulties and problems. In such situation a teacher will be performing many substitute functions to the pupil if he is able to take up these challenges. Therefore the role of the teacher is multifunctional nowadays. He fulfills the role of an educator, a bringing-up-person, a therapist, a witness, a master, a guide, a forming person as a man appointed to those tasks in the conditions of real activity. Such teacher is an authority of the XXI century.

The process of laying foundations for the Catholic media doctrine in the 19th and 20th centuries

 

The media doctrines were developed in the 19th and 20th centuries. The process was conditioned by the law, authorities and society of a particular country. According to specialists there are four main doctrines which are called the press theory: authoritarian, libertarian, communist (Soviet) and of social responsibility. Besides the above mentioned doctrines there is also the Catholic media doctrine, which started to be more intensely formulated during Gregory XIs pontificate and was specifically continued in the teachings of Leo XIII ,Pius X and Pius XI. Also Pius XII and John XXIII, Pope of the breakthrough, considerably contributed to the development of the Catholic theory of the media of social communication. The new stage in this field was opened by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and by, deriving from the Council, pontificates of Paul VI and in particular of John Paul II. Nowadays the conflict between the libertarian and Catholic media doctrines is still visible. Seeing the evil of the absolute freedom of speech, opted for by liberals, the Church establishes clear borders which should not be crossed for the sake of a particular human person. The Catholic media doctrine is imbued with Christian personalism, evangelical vision of man and the world as well as the superiority of ethics over technology.

The level of pedagogical knowledge of today's parents is relatively low. It mainly refers to the awareness of their children's needs, goals, upbringing principles and also threats and hardships of the modern world. The respondents do not fully understand such children's needs as the need of acceptance and dialog. Raising a child for a responsible citizen and a human is often not taken into account. Moreover, such principles as that of setting an example and the principle of presence are not fully realized by the parents. The level of knowledge about modern threats such as: drug taking, sects, uncontrolled peer groups is very low. That is why it education for parents coming both from the rural and urban background by the means of schools, universities and the mass media (TV, radio, the press) is crucial.

Interest in the cooperative learning is connected with actual social-economic conditions, which emphasize human cooperation as a one of the most fundamental elements of effective behavior of big as well as small communities including behavior of worldwide community. Educational systems, which choose the cooperative approaches, react to conditions and needs of society and so they create a power that can contribute to solution of serious problems of the world and individual in this world, questions of values and questions connected to social pathological phenomena.
The aim of the article is to point out the co-operative teaching as one of the forms of effective teaching and so get rid of the myth that only personal breaking through leads to the success of the individual. The aim of the submitted report was to present basic theoretical starting points of model co-operative learning, as one of relevant innovative paradigms of school education.

The reading of the Holy Bible inspires us to getting so much out of this perennial wisdom of upbringing, in order to compose it according to contemporary science rules and also to present them to teachers and pupils as the propositions of implementing such teaching in practice. The Bible's pedagogical thought includes the wide field of educational issues. The reader of the Holy Bible easily can say, that the matter of children, youth and whole society upbringing comes to the fore and is present in almost all books of the Old Testament. Although it doesn't mean that the Bible can be named as a coursebook. We don't find there any scientifically described educational systems, but instead of it we can observe a great number of actual educational wisdoms and practical guides and conclusions. Archbishop Ignacy Tokarczuk - famous polish hierach, priest and indomitable guardian of Catholic Church's freedom, is also uncommon teacher and educator. He is a great theorist with wisdom and adequate knowledge and also a practisian who can use efficient methods and educational tools in present time. Within his reach there were people in different age or state, with different occupations. Archbishop Ignacy Tokarczuk as a professor of the Catholic University of Lublin, was an educator for alumnuses and students. His bishop was also educator for priests and pastor for Good's people. Almost for 30 years his pasturing, he has been bringing Good to the people, in teaching he has been serving to the truth, educating to determined moral demeanors and has bringing closer national and religion awareness. He has supported catholic culture and education trough the development of association of lay people. Particularly he has developed the teachers' priesthood and made big efforts to beatify the teacher from Jarosław, Good's servant, Anna Jenke.

The main educational premise upon which mother Kolumba Białecka had built her own educational system is God's love of man. The Love which has descended onto the world in the person of Jesus Christ and is still present in the Mystery of Eucharist. It is a transcendental love and it has both spiritual and personal nature to the highest extent. This is Jesus Christ, incarnate Love, who is the beginning and the paragon for new man. The new man acts upon the right of love. His perfection arises from following Christ, who bestows his graces upon him and gives him eternal life. This is the chief notion, which guided Róża Białecka both when she built the spirit of her sisters and when she formed the personality of children and youth.
