About the Departament
The Department of International Relations and Security is a continuation of the Department of Political Science established at the Institute of Sociology in 1993. The latter was preceded by the Department of History of Social and Political Thought founded in 1989 thanks to the efforts of Professor Jerzy Rebeta. Currently, the Department of International Relations is headed by Professor Andrzej Podraza.
The Department’s academic staff carry out research projects related primarily to European integration and international security. As far as European integration is concerned, projects concern such topics as the evolution of the European integration process (including theoretical approaches), the institutional system of the European Union, the EU’s position in international relations, the Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy, EU external relations (mainly the European Neighbourhood Policy and the Eastern Partnership), and Poland’s membership in the EU. Regarding international security research projects focus on the functioning of NATO, transatlantic security relations and contemporary security threats and challenges (including in cyberspace).
Other research topics include: international relations in Central and Eastern Europe with a particular focus on the Visegrad Group countries and the post-Soviet area (especially Moldova), the functioning of de facto states (mainly Transnistria), the patron-client relationship, and sovereignty referendums.
