XIV INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL STRATEGIES
IN TIMES OF FINANCIAL CRISIS.
THE EXPERIENCE OF CENTRAL
AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

INTRODUCTION

The lasting financial crisis is considered by social scientists to be the worst and the most painful financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In the economic realm, it caused the bankruptcy and collapse of many financial institutions, depreciation of shares and bonds, downturns in many local and regional stock markets. In the social dimension, the most striking consequences of the global financial crisis are: permanent unemployment, uncontrolled indebtedness, accelerating and deepening impoverishment and social exclusion. Politically, it resulted in e.g. early elections, decline of trust and legitimacy in public institutions, local and regional conflicts, shift of power at the global stage.

The purpose of the conference is to exchange and develop ideas on how to cope with current crisis in the theory and practice. The experience of Central and European countries will be analyzed profoundly.
