Lublin.JPGHistory of the city

Often referred to as the capital of eastern Poland, Lublin is the largest and the fastest developing city on the right side of the Vistula River. Its rich history and the fact that it is located in a multi-cultural melting pot define its characteristic and unique values. They have been particularly well reflected in its architecture, topography and the social and cultural development of the city. All those qualities add to the unique local diversity of our city and make it exceptionally attractive not only to tourists, but also filmmakers, who will surely find it a rich source of inspiration.

Lublin is one of the several cities which made it to the second, final stage of the “European Capital of Culture 2016” competition. We now have nine months to present the complete and extended version of our application. Presentations of all cities aspiring to become the European Capital of Culture of 2016 were held on October 12-13 in the Grand Theatre in Warsaw. The representatives of the candidate cities shared their idea of the ECC before a panel of thirteen jurors during 30-minute presentations, and then they answered the questions asked by the experts. The successful presentation of Lublin took place on the first day of the pre-selection at 3.45 p.m.

On October 13 at 5.00 p.m., Bogdan Zdrojewski, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage announced the decision of the jury, which turned out to be favourable to our city. Other cities recommended by the selection panel to be preselected for the competition include Gdańsk, Katowice, Wrocław and Warsaw
