TEMPERAMENT AND RISKY BEHAVIORST. TEMPERAMENTAL RISK FACTOR OF ADDICTIONS

Many people have the desire to experience challenges, face situations of some uncertainty, or improvise solutions to problems under difficult circumstances, i.e. to take risky behaviors. One type of such behaviors are different kinds of addiction. In this paper the conception of temperamental risk factor is presented. The described research has focused on a construct termed novelty seeking (or, alternatively, sensation seeking) as an explanatory factor; it is posited that a tendency to seek out novel and exciting experiences is a factor that, in combination with environmental conditions and other personal attributes, increases risk for substance use and other problematic behavior.
