Officially the Chair of the Pastoral Care of the Family was established at the Faculty of Theology by the decision of the Senate of the Catholic University of Lublin in 1970. At that time it consisted of two Chairs: the Chair of Catechesis and the Chair of the Pastoral Psychology which were established at the Faculty of Theology at the Catholic University of Lublin. The Head of the Chair of the Pastoral Psychology was Father Professor Piotr Poręba, who, taking particular care for the development of the Major Curriculum of the Pastoral Care of the Family, employed Father Józef Wilk, M.A. for the educational and didactic work.

In 1973 the Major Curriculum of the Pastoral Care of the Family was transformed into the Chair of the Pastoral Care of the Family and incorporated into the Institute of the Pastoral Theology of the Catholic University of Lublin. A year later, the Chair of the Pastoral Psychology was replaced by the Chair of the Pedagogy in the Family established by Father Professor Piotr Poręba and it was functioning in the Institute of the Pastoral Theology until 2001. The work of the Major Curriculum of the Pastoral Care of the Family was led by Father Professor Piotr Poręba during 1970-1981, when he was the Head of the Chair of The Pedagogy in the Family; during 1982-1987 by Father Professor Romuald Rak, who was the curator of the Chair; from 1987 to 1996 by Father Professor Józef Wilk, who was the Head of the Chair; from 1997 to 2001 by Father Professor Ryszard Kamiński.

In 2001 the Chair of the Pedagogy of the Family, in connection with establishing the Chair with the same name at the Faculty of the Social Sciences at the Catholic University of Lublin, was renamed and became the Chair of the Pastoral Care of the Family. In the same year, the Institute of the Pastoral Theology at the Catholic University of Lublin was divided into the Institute of the Pastoral Care and Cathechesis and the Institute of Liturgy and Homilectics. The Institute of the Pastoral Care and Catechesis included three major curricula: the Major Curriculum in the Practical Theology, the Major Curriculum in Catechesis and the Major Curriculum in the Pastoral Care of the Family. Meanwhile, the Institute of the Pastoral Care and the Insitute of Liturgy and Hiomilectics were joined, establishing the Institute of the Pastoral Theology. However, on October 1st, 2009 the Institute of the Pastoral Theology was divided into the Institute of the Pastoral Theology and Catechesis and the Institute of Liturgy and Homilectics. The Institute of the Pastoral Theology and Catechesis comprised four major curricula: the Major Curriculum in the Practical Theology, in Catechesis, in the Pastoral Care of the Family and in the Media Education. The Heads of the Major Curriculum in the Pastoral Care of the Family were: 2001-2009 Father Professor Ryszard Kamiński, as the curator of the Chair; from 2010 to 2013 Father Profesor Ryszard Kamiński, as the Head of the Chair; from October 2013 to 2014 Father Professor Mirosław Kalinowski, as the curator of the Chair; since October 2014 Father Professor Jacek Goleń has been the Head of the Chair of the Pastoral Care of the Family.
