THE INTERPRETATION OF SYMBOLIC COMMUNICATIONS BY ALEXITHYMIC AND NONALEXITHYMIC PATIENTS

Abstract. The project involved drawing comparisons between alexithymic and nonalexithymic individuals for features: the ability to recognize emotions symbolized in works of art. And the capacity for communicating one’s emotional state verbally when exposed to works of art. The research group comprised 56 individuals, 35 women 21 men between 23 and 67 years of age (29 alexithymics and 27 nonalexithymics). Three methods of measurement were implemented: The Polish adaptation of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-26), Transcript Analysis (TA) and test developed by Durand to assess symbolic function (AT9-version). The T-student test was used to verify the research hypotheses. The research results confirmed the premise that desymbolizing process of alexithymics individuals is substantially weaker in comparison with that of nonalexithymics and that their capabilities to inform other people about their emotional state are diminished.
