THE POWER OF TRANSITIONAL CONTEXT:THE CASE OF THE IZRAELI JEWISH SOCIETY

Abstract. Following the assumption that human individuals and communities act in a given context and that the context influences the way they behave, the authors of this article introduce the concept of transitional context. Transitional contexts consists of observable, well-defined physical, social, political economic, military and psychological conditions of transitional character which shape the environment in which these individuals an communities function. These conditions arise as a result of critical events and information, as perceived and understood by members of society, and consequently influencing their behavior and functioning. The article presents an analysis of strong transitional contexts with negative consequences for society members, specifically an analysis of the Israeli society after the failure of the peace process and break-out of Al-Aksa Intifada in 2000. The authors believe that the behavior of the majority of Israeli Jews could have been accurately predicted on the basis of the critical events which the society encountered, crucial information which was spread and psychological circumstances created by these events and information. The conclusion of the article presents a range of implications following from the presented theory.
