THE REGULATIVE ROLE OF LOCUS OF CONTROL IN MILD MENTALLY RETARDED YOUTH'S COPING
Abstract. The main aim of the research was to verify the regulative role of locus of
control in mild mentally retarded youth's coping style. Individuals aged 17-19 were
divided into the external or internal locus of control group and they were compared in
style and strategies of dealing with stressful situations. Survey of the personal traits
and reactions was carried with special tests matched cognitive possibilities of sample
and fulfilling all methodological assumptions and psychometric conditions (Kościelak,
1987; Kurtek, 2002). The results show that style of coping distinguishes these groups
(p.i. = 0,03). More internal locus of control youth obtained higher level of task-oriented
tendency whereas outerdirected persons reached higher level of defence-focusing style.
Internal locus of control facilitates task strategies of coping with deprivation, threat or
conflicts (presented by K. Lewin) such as revaluation and cognitive reconstruction of
aversive conflict, seeking solutions of interpersonal problems or assertiveness. In con-
trast, individuals with external locus of control prefer avoiding and emotional strate-
gies of coping.
