THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE LEXICAL RESOURCE IN THE PROCESS OF UNDERSTANDING A TEXT
Summary. The paper shows some conceptions and research on the
relationships between the lexical resource and other aspects of the
reader's linguistic system and the process of understanding a text.
Three conceptions have been presented, all of them dealing with the
formation of the above relationships: instrumental hypothesis (causal
relationship), specific abilities and the knowledge acquired by the
reader. The psychological mechanisms have been subjected to a
more thorough analysis, its practical conee-quence being three
various methods of how to extend the mental vocabulary of the
pupil. They are the following: methods of contextual analysis of
words, constructing semantic nets and analyzing the semantic
features of the acquired words. The paper shows three of the above
strategies to enrich the lexical resource of the pupil. As a result of the
considerations, it has been pointed that the strategies, aiming to show
the pupils a hierarchic ordering of the conceptual structures,
contribute to the enlargement of their general lexical resource.
Consequently, they find it easier to correctly understand various
texts. The research of the 1990s proved that lexical abilities affect
the process of understanding a text and interact with other subjective
and textual variables, thereby revealing the complex character of the
process of understanding a text and the conditions of that
understanding.
