THE UNDERSTANDING OF VERBAL METAPHORS BY THE NEUROTIC PEOPLE
AND POTENTIAL ARTISTS

Summary. The study compares the ability to understand sense and emotional tone of verbal metaphors by subjects with neurotic traits and people potentially creative. The concept of the understanding of a symbolic message, such as a metaphor, is referred to the process of de-semantization. 61 subject, aged 19-21, took part in the research (31 subject with neurotic traits and 30 regarded as creative). In the initial selection of research groups two methods of measurement were used: Eysenck's Test EPQ-R Kruglanski's the Need for Closure Scale (NFCS). For the proper research the author's own method was applied. The material for analysis consisted of some selected meta-phors from the anthology of poetry, such metaphors that are not in colloquial use or emotionally tained. The findings confirmed the presumption that neurotic subjects failed to understand the emotional tone to the metaphors, with regard to one of „verb" meta-phors. The results signal also that there is a difference between groups as regards the interpretation of metaphors with reference to fear.
