TO REMEMBER FOR EVER: THE SPECIFICITY OF FLASHBULB MEMORIES

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to describe the evolution of flashbulb memory
hipothesis proposed by Brown and Kulik (1977). The literature review showed that
flashbulb memories are formed to emotional and personally important life-events rather
than newsworthy public events. These memories are more detailed, vivid, tightly
organised and long-lasting than most everyday autobiographical memories. The data
from relevant research support, the view that flashbulb memories play a specific role
in autobiographical memory.
