Disappointment with democracy: Sociopsychological factors

Abstract. A quarter of a century ago, there was a widespread belief that liberal democracy was the best and the most desirable political system. But in the recent years one could observe many indications of a growing disappointment with democracy. I argue that one source of this disappointment is the discrepancy between the popular beliefs about democracy (implicit theories) and democratic practice. In our research we found at least four different implicit theories of democracy. The real democracy only partially fits these theories. Another source of disappointment is related to the “conservative shift” that has occurred in various societies. This shift is associated with the uncertainty and fear evoked by the economic crisis and sociopolitical conflicts that affected these societies. Psychological research indicates that the sense of uncertainty and fear foster conservative ideology and Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA). Those are beliefs that are more or less incompatible with liberal democracy. But disappointment with this system is also related to its functioning. In various countries, including Poland, the system took the form of so called adversarial democracy. Such democracy is not likely to meet citizens’ important needs and expectations. There are some psychological arguments for the belief that the democratic system could meet these expectations’ much better if it operated on deliberative rather than adversarial principles.

The mediating role of coping strategies in the relation between resiliency and personal growth in adolescents who have experienced a negative life event

Abstract. Background: The purpose of the research was to investigate the mediating role of strategies of coping with stress in the relation between resiliency and personal growth in a group of adolescents. Materials and methods: Data from 60 adolescents who have experienced a negative life event were analyzed. The participants’ age ranged from 16 to 17 years (M = 16.53, SD = 0.50). The instruments used in the study were: the Personal Growth Questionnaire, the Resiliency Assessment Scale measuring resiliency in children and adolescents, and Coping Responses Inventory-Youth – CRI-48. Results: The results of the mediation analyses indicate that two situational strategies play the role of mediators: taking action to solve the problem and seeking alternative rewards. Conclusions: In the process of posttraumatic growth both problem- focused and avoidance strategies are important.

3. Integracja i konfrontacja w dialogu wewnętrznym – analiza języka

Integration and confrontation in internal dialogue – a linguistic analysis

Abstract. Interest in integrative and confrontational internal dialogues has been growing; however researchers define them differently. The article proposes a theoretical approach to integration and confrontation as independent dimensions in internal dialogue as well as an empirical method of measuring these processes. Additionally, the results of linguistic analysis of integrative and confrontational dialogues are presented. It was found that these two types of dialogues differ in terms of several linguistics categories (determined using LIWC). The intensity of integration is explained by three variables: first-person singular pronouns, negations, and certainty. Confrontation intensity is linked to two categories: inhibition and present tense verbs.

The preference of value types as a predictor of the sense of quality of life in artistically gifted adults

Abstract. The study explored the association between the preference of value types (SVS) and the level of global satisfaction with life and the sense of quality of life in artistically gifted adults in five areas: (1) physical and material well-being; (2) relations with other people; (3) social, community, and civic activities; (4) personal development and fulfillment; (5) recreation. To measure satisfaction with life, I used the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) by Diener and the Quality of Life Scale (QOLS) by Flanagan. The study group consisted of 74 persons (males and females) aged 50-60 years who had outstanding artistic achievements. The analysis of the results indicates that there was a significant correlation between the preference of value types and the sense of quality of life in group of artists. The high level of satisfaction with life in artistically gifted adults depends on a preference of value types such as: Self-direction (in most areas of satisfaction) and Benevolence (in physical and material well-being). The low level of satisfaction with life depends on a preference of Power, Hedonism, Stimulation, and Achievement.

Polish adaptation of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale and its significance in the prediction of selected externalized problems and disorders

Abstract. Lynam and Whiteside’s research argues that impulsive behavior is determined by four basic features: urgency, premeditation, perseverance, and sensation seeking. By contrast, Cyders et al. show that there are two subfactors of urgency: negative urgency and positive urgency. Based on these studies, the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale was developed. The purpose of this article is to present the results of research on the Polish adaptation UPPS-P and to assess its psychometric properties. I also assessed the usefulness of the UPPS-P model for the prediction of externalizing problems and disorders, in particular those related to alcohol use. The validation study was conducted on a normative sample of 1.063 individuals aged from 15 to 35 of whom 46% were adolescents and students, and on two clinical samples: socially maladjusted adolescents (N = 37) and alcohol addicts undergoing treatment (N = 31). In order to assess the accuracy of the UPPS-P, I used the Eysenck’s Impulsivity Inventory, the Self Control Scale by Tangney, Baumeister & Boone, and Poprawa’s Alcohol Use Scale. The results confirmed the four-factor structure of the UPPS-P and the existence of two subfactors of urgency. The Polish version of the UPPS-P scale is a reliable and valid measure of relatively independent and fundamental aspects of impulsivity. This tool can be successfully used in the diagnosis of personal characteristics predisposing to externalizing problems and disorders, especially those related to alcohol.
