UNCONSCIOUS MEMORY: REVIEW OF RESEARCH AND THEORIES

Abstract. Implicit memory is a relatively new area of research which has recently been attracting much attention. This form of memory is investigated by means of indirect tasks, i. e., ones which do not require conscious or intentional recollection of past experience. The existing body of research suggests that many variables cause dissociation between implicit and explicit tests of memory. This article presents the methods used to measure unconscious forms of memory. The presentation is followed by a review of research on the relation between explicit and implicit memory. The article concludes with a discussion of theoretical approaches which try to explain unconscious memory.
