Abstract. The objective of the study was to identify the factors which, transmitted
from generation to generation, increase the risk of occurrence of sexual abuse of a child
in the family. In this study I focus on present consequences of sexual abuse experien-
ced by women in their childhood for their parenting. Using the qualitative method
I investigated women who had experienced familial sexual abuse in their childhood
and whose children are also sexually abused. I define sexual abuse, including incest,
and types of sexual abuse experienced by the investigated women, adding to their
description from the results of previous research, and I provide estimate data on the
incidence of particular types of abuse experienced by women. I indicate characteristics
of the investigated women and of their mothers whose occurrence is associated with
difficulties in undertaking the parental role and which contribute to insufficient pro-
tection of the child from sexual abuse. I also indicate the associations between these
characteristics and the relationships with the child and with the partner. I distinguish
two types of mothers who are passive offender of sexual abuse, two styles of raising
and four types of mothers who are active offender of sexual abuse. I also touch on the
issue of the psychological approach to the care-giver supporting the child.
