The aim of that paper is to show the position of the construct of arousal in research on temperament. Some arguments have been presented in favour of the standpoint which regards temperament as having a biological background; the notion of arousal refers, among other thing, to this view, This notion has been analyzed the historical perspective, and particular attention has been paid to general (global) arousal. Arousal as such should be define as a hypothetical construct, referring to the energy released by the organism as whole, owing to all the structurally and functionally specific units (mechanisms) which take part in the control over the energetic excitatory components of reactions, states, an behaviors. The relationship between arousal and arousability has been discussed, assuming that arousability, while referring to all kinds of chronic (hormonal, automatic, cortical, behavioral) arousal, permits to explain the biological fundations of individual differences in temperament. In reference to the construct of arousability, the following dimensions have been taken into account: extroversy, neuroticism, emotionality, emotional reactivity, activity, sensation seeking, strength of the nervous system, anxiety, impulsivity and inhibited temperament. All these have enabled a broad synthesis of the findings based on many various paradigms of personality (temperament).
