The Department of Molecular Biology was established by a decision of the Senate of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin in September 1998. It was headed by Professor Ryszard Szyszka, PhD. The research initially focused on issues related to the molecular mechanisms regulating the protein synthesis machinery in cells under normal and stress conditions, as well as on enzymatic proteins involved in one of the most common regulatory mechanisms in living organisms — reversible protein phosphorylation. Particular attention was devoted at that time to protein kinase CK2, which is a component of numerous cellular signaling pathways and participates in the regulation of physiological and pathological cellular processes such as tumorigenesis, transcription regulation, cell cycle control, and apoptosis, as well as to molecules modulating its activity. Over the years, the laboratory infrastructure, research equipment, and consequently the research areas have been gradually expanded to include genetic engineering, microbiology, and protein biotechnology.
In 2021, the Department was taken over by Konrad Kubiński, PhD, Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Lublin, who currently leads an 11-member research team composed of scientists specializing in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, protein biotechnology, biochemistry and enzymology, genetic engineering, and cell culture. Today, the Department’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating enzymatic activity, mutagenesis of selected kinase substrate proteins and its impact on phosphorylation and other intracellular processes, expression and purification of recombinant proteins using bacterial and yeast expression systems, evaluation of antibacterial and antifungal properties of compounds of natural and synthetic origin, studies of anticancer activity using cell cultures, and assessment of the cytotoxicity of natural and synthetic substances.
