Faith and Moral Reasoning

The theme of “faith and reason” is one of the most frequently visited in the history of Christian-inspired thought, and its basic solutions appear well established, despite repeated attempts, especially in the 20th century, to situate faith in the vicinity of paradox rather than logic. Less studied and more uncertain, on the other hand, is the problem of the relationship between faith and moral reasoning: are there faith-based ethical precepts that go beyond the capacity of natural understanding? And if so, what are they and how can they ultimately be justified? In this course, an attempt will be made to set out the problem, to analyse some of the answers that have been given to it, sometimes only implicitly, and to propose some lines of reflection suited to contemporary culture and society. Special attention will be paid to the thought of Karol Wojtyła / John Paul II, who in his role as philosopher and pope addressed the different sides of this problem.
