The Rev. Prof. Dr. Hab. Antoni Dębiński,

Rector of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL)

Fr. Dębiński was born April 28, 1953 in Lublin. He is a Catholic priest and full Professor of Law, specializing in Roman law. He completed philosophical-theological studies at the Faculty of Theology of KUL in 1978 and canon law studies (specializing in Roman law) at the Faculty of Civil and Canon Law of KUL in 1985. He obtained his Ph.D. in law in 1989 and completed his habilitation in 1996. In 2009, by decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, he was awarded the title of Professor of Law.

In 1985, he started work as a research and teaching assistant in the Chair of Roman Law at the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration. In 1997, upon completion of his habilitation, he was appointed Head of that Chair. From 1996 to 2000, he served as chairperson of the Committee on Student Discipline and, since 2003, chairperson of the University Publishing Committee. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the College of Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in the Humanities at KUL. For several years, he was a tutor of the Law Students’ Society and was also a member of the Program Council of the Congress of Polish Culture 2000 held in Lublin.

From 1999 to 2004, Fr. Dębiński served as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration and, from 2004 to 2012, Dean. He was a co-founder of several non-degree postgraduate programmes and of the Faculty’s School of Ukrainian Law. He initiated the development of European Studies at KUL in Polish in 2008 and in English in 2010. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Program Board of the Olympiad in European Integration and, since 2009, chairperson of the Program Board of the Polish National School of the Judiciary and Public Prosecution.

He is a member of several learned societies and associations, including: the Scientific Committee on Ancient Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences; the Scientific Society of KUL; Lublin Scientific Society; and the Legal Sciences Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Lublin Branch. He is editor-in-chief of the quarterly Studia Prawnicze KUL [Law Journal of KUL] and a member of the editorial boards of several journals, including: “The Review of Comparative Law”, “Studia z Prawa Wyznaniowego” [Studies in Law on Religion], Roczniki Nauk Prawnych [The Annals of Juridical Sciences], and Edukacja Prawnicza [Legal Education].

Fr. Dębiński held research fellowships at the Universities of Paris (1988, 1992), Louvain-la-Neuve (1993), Leuven (2002), and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies of the University of Notre Dame (2009). He was a visiting professor at a number of foreign universities, including: Indiana University (2008), Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (2008), Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2009), "1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia (2010). He taught Roman law at the Theological Institute in Spišská Kapitula (1997-1998) and at the Theology Faculty in Velehrad (1999-2000).

His research interests focus on the history of law and Roman law, particularly Roman criminal, sacral, and administrative law; the history of and contemporary Roman law; European legal culture; and the history of ecclesiastical law.

Fr. Dębiński is supervisor of 12 doctoral theses. He is author of Rzymskie prawo prywatne. Kompendium [Roman Private Law: A Compendium], 5th edition (Warsaw: LexisNexis, 2011) and (with J. Misztal-Konecka and M. Wójcik) Rzymskie prawo publiczne [Roman Public Law] (Warsaw: C.H. Beck, 2010) and numerous journal articles and reviews.
