Summary: The term “competence” owes its interdisciplinary character to the richness of its semantic contest. Hence, it is used in various scientific disciplines, including the social sciences. The objective of the following article is to look more closely at the notion of competence, that is, how is has been approached in psychology from the late 1950 till today. The article aims at presenting the issues related to the conceptualization of competence. Furthermore, some ambiguities in the nomenclature used by researchers and theoreticians as well as in the way competence is presents have been noticed. It has provoked the author of this article to formulate some specifications. Some efforts have been made to systematize the knowledge in this area. The analsis of competence has finally resulted in the defining personality competence indicators and formulating the basis to mark them out from personal competences. As an illustration of the latter temporal competences have been discussed in some detail.

Summary: The author reviews a current literature on adult children, who are brought up by families with alcoholic problem. The analysis concentrate on 3 groups of problem: on discovering the kinds of conflicts which children from alcoholic families experience, on researching factors which could determinate probabilities of psychopathology, and on psychoactive substance abuse by adult children from alcoholic families.

Michał HARCIAREK (2005). Krzysztof JODZIO, Charakterystyka wybranych zaburzeń emocjonalnych po udarze prawej półkuli mózgu // Selected emotional disturbances following right hemispheric stroke Roczniki Psychologiczne // Annals of Psychology, 8, 2, 55-71.


Summary: The brain substrates of individual emotional processes and of their disorders are relatively poorly known. The objective of this study was evaluation of selected emotional disturbances following ischaemic stroke of the right hemisphere. The state of affect as well as the capability of visual and auditory recognition of emotion were characterised.

30 patients after the right hemispheric stroke and 31 healthy subjects took part in the study. The following instruments were utilised in the study: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Zigmond, Snaith, 1983), Mania Scale (Pużyński, 1979), Emotional Prosody Test from The Right Hemisphere Language Battery (Bryant, 1995; Łojek et al., 2000) and Facial Affect Recognition Test (Ekman, Friesen, 1976).

In patients with damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, emotional disorders of depressive and manic nature of varying severity were observed. A strong association was found between receptive prosody and the ability to recognice facial affect. The dissociation of emotional differentiation disorders was found with respect to the analysed modalities: visual recognition of joy and auditory recognition of sadness caused the least problems.

This study demonstrates the association between affective disturbances with right hemisphere damage. The results suggest an non-specific common machanism of emocional perception whose course is dependent on the content specification of a stimulus.

Paweł KONIAK (2005). Znaczenie etykiet ideologicznych i poglądów politycznych w ewaluacji przekazu politycznego // The role of ideological label and political attitudes in evaluation of political message Roczniki Psychologiczne // Annals of Psychology, 8, 2, 73-92.


Summary: The role of “easy” and “hard” issues, and ideological labels in evaluation of political message are considered. In experimental research 199 Ss participated and three hypotheses were tested: 1) “Ideological symbols” hypothesis assumes that messages with label, which is consistent with addresser’ left/right self-identifications, are preferred; 2) “Issue voting” hypothesis assumes that message consistent with addresser’s “capitalist”/”socialist” view is preferred; 3) “Easy-issue voting” hypothesis assumes that addresser preferres a message containing opinion consistent with his/her view on issue of influence of Catholic Church on politics and national affairs. “Ideological symbols” hypothesis wasn’t confirmed. “Issue voting” and “Easy-issue voting” hypotheses were only partially confirmed. However, in each case Ss preferred the message that was a collection of truisms, in which concrete solutions were absent.

Dominika POGORZELEC, Oleg GORBANIUK (2005). Predyktory prośrodowiskowych wyborów konsumenckich // Predicators of proenvironmental consumer choices Roczniki Psychologiczne // Annals of Psychology, 8, 2, 93-110.


Summary: This paper deals with the problem of the predictors of purchasing proenvironmental products. The research sample consisted of 109 people at different age from general population. It was assumed that higher level of ecological awareness, stronger feeling of ecological responsibility and stronger general responsibility influence proenvironmental consumer choices. Analysis of the results reveals that consumers that think they have great control over their consumer behaviours, possess stronger feeling of general responsibility, feel shared responsibility for the present condition of the environment and have stronger beliefs about mutual connections with the nature are more willing to buy ecological products. However, the influence of demographic variables (age, sex, education) on choices of ecological products was not found.

Katarzyna JĘDRUSZCZAK (2005). Prywatność jako potrzeba w ramach koncepcji siebie // Privacy as a need “localized in” self-concept Roczniki Psychologiczne // Annals of Psychology, 8, 2, 111-135.


Summary: The article presents privacy as a multidimensional need “localized in” self-concept. The main purpose of the research was to find links between need for privacy and some other human needs. Two methods were used: ACL and Social Preferences Questionnaire. The results show that need for privacy is not merely the opposite of need for affiliation and cannot be reduced to a process of maintaining the individual’s autonomy. However, there are correlations between need of exhibition, need of heterosexual contacts, amount of revealing information (number of checked adjectives) and privacy. Additionally need for privacy is the same for women and men but associated with different elements of self-concept (for each sex).
