Uniwersalna hierarchia wartości - fakt czy fikcja?

Abstract. The study bears on the theories of Max Scheler and Józef Tischner, which
assume the existence of the universal hierarchy of values. Its aim is to discover that
hierarchy. The following questions arę considered: l) Is it possible to distinguish two or
three groups of values which systematically differ m their importance? 2) Is the two-
•three-leveled hierarchy of values characteristic of Polish groups or is it more univer-
sal? 3) Do the available data lead one to distinguish two or three levels of hierarchy?
The data have been collected with the use of Brzozowski's SWS scales and Rokeach's
Value Scalę. Two complimentary studies arę described. One of them was conducted
with SWS on eight Polish groups, the other was a metaanalysis based on research
conducted with Rokeach scale (thirty three analyses of data from eleven countries).
The study in which SWS was used suggest a positive answer to the first question,
whereas the metaanalyses have proved that the two-leveled hierarchy of values is
a widespread one (lower and higher). The third group of values, in which TRUTH is
included, does not consistently stand apart. A conclusion is drawn that there exists
a widespread (universal?) hierarchy of values, whose shape, however (i.e. the number
of levels and their content), is not known at this stage.
