The Institute of Legal Sciences conducts research on the following provinces of law:
Roman law (the research focuses in particular on the impact of Roman law on the juridical order of the Western Church, influence of Roman law on the development of canon law, Roman criminal law, Roman law and modern civil law, the status of a physician in Roman Law, Roman law in the writings and activities of the Church Fathers)
History of political system and Law (the research focuses in particular on the history of the political system and law of Poland after 1918 and during the period of the Polish People’s Republic, as well as on the history of the political system and law of the United States of America and the Great Britain; it also encompasses the influence of Roman law on Polish law and on the development of legal scholarship and legal practice in the pre‑partition era, the constitutional model and judiciary of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, including the relationship between the legal foundations of state authority and its actual functioning, as well as Polish criminal law up to the year 1795)
Philosophy of law (the research focuses in particular on European philosophy of law, idea of law, axiology of law, methodology of legal sciences, analytical philosophy of law, French and German philosophy of law, neo-Thomist philosophy of law and history of philosophy of law)
Constitutional law (the research focuses in particular on constitutional foundations of political system, foundations of the independence of the judiciary, democratic state of law and its sovereignty)
International, American and European Union Law (the research focuses in particular on problems of international environmental law, protection of human rights, diplomatic and consular law, international legal aspects of Polish co-operation with neighbouring states, sources of international law, international adjudication, the law of the sea, space law, migration law, institutional law of the European Union, internal market freedoms and European Union policies, protection of fundamental rights in the European Union)
Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (the research focuses in particular on the analysis of systems for the protection of human rights and individual subjective rights in international, European, supranational and domestic law, as well as issues pertaining to international humanitarian law and legal aspects of security, including cybersecurity)
Law on Religion (the research focuses in particular on freedom of thought, conscience, and religion of every individual, as well as on the legal status of churches and other religious organizations under Polish law, taking into account a comparative law perspective, Strasbourg standards, and European Union law)
Civil law (the research focuses in particular on Jan Gwiazdomorski as an icon of Polish private law, liability for damage caused by artificial intelligence systems, certification of inheritance, non‑pecuniary testamentary dispositions, legal aspects of protecting the interests of minors within the civil law system, the significance of gratuitous acts in succession law)
Commercial law (the research focuses in particular on key issues in Polish capital company law, commercial contracts and trademarks in relation to European Union law, civil‑law institutions within commercial law, the structural and functional aspects of private‑law corporations with particular emphasis on commercial companies)
Labour and social insurance law (the research focuses in particular on collective agreements under labour law, re-codification of labour law, protection of labour agreements in comparative analysis, doctrine of employment-at-will in the United States of America, legal costs in labour law actions)
Civil procedure (the research focuses in particular on comparative legal analysis of judicial institution, digitalization of civil procedure, bankruptcy and restructuring proceedings, effectiveness and efficiency of legal actions in civil proceedings, jurisdictional acts in civil matters)
Criminal law (the research focuses in particular on the criminal‑law protection of life and the family, the theory of punishment, juvenile law, the evolution of criminal legislation in response to advances in biomedical sciences, criminal‑law measures aimed at combating terrorism, the communist criminal law of the Polish People’s Republic, as well as the scholarly legacy and intellectual contributions of Professor Juliusz Makarewicz)
Criminal procedure (the research focuses in particular on coherence and respect for the principle of proportionality in the application of instruments of mutual recognition of judicial decisions in criminal matters in the European Union, application of instruments of mutual recognition of judicial decisions in criminal matters in the European Union, complaint against appellate court cassatory judgement, legal professional privilege and its protection in the Polish criminal proceedings, evidentiary value of expert opinion in criminal proceedings, law of evidence - the use of new investigative measures and techniques in obtaining evidence for criminal proceedings, analysis of European standards for the protection of human rights in criminal proceedings)
Administrative law (the research focuses in particular on axiology of administrative law, decentralisation of public administration personal data protection law, access to public information, antitrust law, press law, intellectual property law)
Local government law and administrative sciences (the research focuses in particular on the structures of public administration and the digitalization of public administration, in particular the impact of information‑technology tools on the functioning and efficiency of public administration, as well as the analysis of the organizational framework of public administration in terms of its effectiveness and efficiency in performing public tasks, and the influence of different organizational structures on the degree to which such tasks are carried out)
Public finances (the research focuses in particular on tax law system, selected problems of Polish and international tax law, adjustment of Polish tax regulations to the European Union standards)
Public economic law (the research focuses in particular on regulatory frameworks governing personal data protection and data security in the context of the development of artificial intelligence, legal assessment of environmental determinants within environmental impact assessment procedures, legal issues related to the establishment, modification of boundaries and abolition of area-based nature conservation regimes, as well as an analysis of the legal mechanisms for the implementation of the European Union’s climate and energy policy)
Negotiation and mediation (the research focuses in particular on amicable methods of resolving disputes, in particular the resolution of consumer disputes, the legal nature of the mediation settlement and the willingness of judges and entrepreneurs to mediate)
