The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin is the oldest university in Lublin and one of the oldest universities in Poland.

It was founded in 1918 on the initiative of Rev. Idzi Radziszewski, who became its first Rector. Since the beginning of its existence, the task of the University has been to serve God and Homeland - Deo et Patriae.

During its almost 100 years of history the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) has become one of the most important centers of Catholic thought that influenced the shape of Polish science and culture, gaining wide recognition in Poland and abroad.

Today the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin is open to the civilisational and scientific challenges of today. Alongside theology, philosophy, social sciences, law and humanities mathematics and natural sciences are being developed to prepare students for full and responsible work for the good of the Homeland and the Church.

At present, KUL enrolls approximately 10,400 students, including approximately 900 foreign students in various programmes. The university has reputation for high standards of education and research, the profile of which is determined by humanistic tradition of the university as well as openness to the needs of a contemporary man.

The University has six faculties organized into institutes and departments with over forty degree programmes. There is a branch of KUL located in Stalowa Wola.

Due to Lublin’s geographical location and its history, KUL has strong ties both with the East and the West. It is only a stone’s throw from Lublin to such marvelous and thriving cities as Warsaw, Cracow or Lviv.

The graduates and the faculty of KUL hold many important positions in social, cultural, ecclesiastical and political life. Among them was the Pope John Paul II, who had held the Chair of Ethics in KUL’s

Faculty of Philosophy for many years.
