The International Conference "From Negotiations to Integration"

The conference "From Negotiations to Integration. The Polish experience of the accession process and the path to Ukraine's membership in the European Union," will be held on March 25, 2024 at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The event is a summary of the project "From discourse of 'Europeanness' to EU membership: integration narratives in Poland and Ukraine in comparative perspective. Merging theoretical and utilitarian approaches," funded by the Foundation for Polish Science.

May 1, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Poland's accession to the European Union. The event, which took place 15 years after the collapse of the communist system in Poland, represents a watershed moment, having opened the way for the young democracy to enter European integration. However, the celebration of the anniversary is taking place in the shadow of the drama unfolding across the eastern border - Russia's two-year-long full-scale war with Ukraine, which was preceded by nearly a decade of hybrid conflict and political destabilization of Poland's eastern neighbor. The ongoing fighting has reinforced the long-standing pro-European sentiment in Ukrainian society. The successful process initiated three decades ago in Poland and the practices developed at that time may also prove helpful in the case of Ukraine. The primary goal of our conference is therefore to exchange the experiences of theoreticians and practitioners of the European negotiation process on the side of representatives of Poland, Ukraine, and EU institutions. It is also equally important to familiarize a wider audience with the Ukrainian path towards European structures.
