The Department of General Norms and Ecclesiastical Patrimonial Law was founded in 2014 through the amalgamation of the former existing Departments of General Norms and Ecclesiastical Patrimonial Law, whose research continues within its statutory activity.
The subject of research are both the issues of general norms (in particular, the concept of the authority in the Church, the position of natural or juridical person in the canonical legal system) as well as ecclesiastical patrimonial law (in particular, issues relating to the financing methods of ecclesiastical institutions, the management of ecclesiastical goods, and the acts of alienation in canon law).
The source of scientific research is provided by the Code of Canon Law 1983 (especially the analysis of the legal provisions in Book I and Book V CIC/1983) the documents of Vatican II and the implementing decrees of the Apostolic See and the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts.
The department staff collaborate with many research centers throughout the country and abroad including: Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw, Universidad de Navarra Pamplona (Spain) and Saint Paul University, Ottawa (Canada) . They are also members of recognized scientific societies such as the Association of Polish Canonists, The Scientist Society KUL and the Canon Law Society of Great Britain & Ireland.
From amongst the research conducted by the department staff certain prized monograms should be distinguished, namely: Rev. Stanisław Dubiel, Uprawnienia majątkowe Kościoła katolickiego Polsce w świetle Kodeksu Prawa Kanonicznego z 1983 roku, Konkordatu z 1993 roku i Ustaw synodalnych, Lublin 2007, pp. 302; rev. Pawel Kaleta, Zadania zarządcy majątku kościelnego w Kodeksie Prawa Kanonicznego i w polskich synodach diecezjalnych, Lublin 2012, pp. 227; as well as Kościelne Prawo Majątkowe, Lublin 2014, pp. 328.
