Law is a momentous factor in the development of the European culture, whose spirit was shaped under the influence of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. As a scientific discipline, it has been cultivated since the foundation of the first European university in Bologna, that is, since the turn of the 11th century. It was the first school where the Roman and canon law were taught – the then dominating and universal legal systems.
At the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin law as a scientific discipline has been pursued since the very beginning of the University existence. In the year 1918, the Faculty of Law and Socio-Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Canon Law were incorporated into the University structure. At present, the almost ninety-year-old juridical tradition at our Alma Mater is continued by the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration.
The characteristic feature of studies at our University is that they concentrate on the universal and humanistic, and not only professional aspect of education. According to this assumption, the curricula, besides the core, fundamental legal subjects, additionally encompass general lectures on the issues pertaining to the world of values, ethics, Catholic social science and thinking. The Faculty of Law having its share in the University mission, following the idea of Deo et Patriae, endeavors to school the future lawyers, so that they will be capable of boldly facing the contemporary challenges, creatively participating in the process of transformation in our country and utilizing their skills and education.
