On the Universal Claim of Hermeneutics
Gadamer defines the task of hermeneutics as "the opening up of the hermeneutical dimension in its full scope, showing its fundamental significance for our entire understanding of the world". Habermas criticizes this stance on the grounds that it is insufficient for the task of changing the world for the better. Ricoeur mediates this discussion, arguing that both philosophical heremeneutics and a critique of ideology are necessary. However, in the course of his mediation, Ricoeur implicitly supports Gadamer's position. By offering a hermeneutic reading of Habermas's theory of emancipation, Ricoeur reaffirms the universal claim of hermeneutics. In the process, Ricoeur sets the foundation for his own "critical hermeneutics", which enhances the role of hermeneutics in application as well as understanding.
Uniwersalny charakter hermeneutyki
