The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin is the oldest university in Lublin and one of the oldest universities in Poland. It was founded in 1918 on the initiative of Rev. Idzi Radziszewski, who became its first Rector. Since the beginning of its existence, the task of the University has been to serve God and Homeland - Deo et Patriae. During its almost 100 years of history the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) has become one of the most important centres of Catholic thought that influenced the shape of Polish science and culture, gaining wide recognition in Poland and abroad.

The graduates of KUL hold many important positions in social, cultural, ecclesiastical and political life. Among them was the Pope John Paul II. First as an assistant professor, then as a bishop, archbishop and cardinal, he headed the Department of Ethics at the Faculty of Philosophy for almost a quarter of a century. He started his work at KUL in October 1954 with lectures on ethics. He combined his didactic and scientific work with his pastoral service. He worked at the university until the memorable conclave in October 1978. After the death of the Holy Father in 2005, in tribute to its Great Professor, the Senate of KUL passed a resolution to change the name of the University onto the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.

Today, the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin is an open university, where people of all religious denominations are welcome. Lectures and classes at KUL are conducted by highly qualified academic staff, who excel as teachers and researchers in diverse domains of science. Polish and foreign students can study in a wide range of faculties and disciplines. Alongside theology, philosophy, social sciences, law, humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, medical and nursing studies are being developed, to prepare students for responsible work.
