Lublin is the largest city in Eastern Poland and the capital of the Voivodship (province) of Lublin; it is the ‘Gateway of the European Union into the East’, the capital of Eastern Poland.

The city is located in Eastern Poland near the northern end of the Lublin Upland. The valley of the river Bystrzyca divides the city into two parts, different in terms of their landscape. Historically, Lublin belongs to Lesser Poland and is the capital of the region of Lubelszczyzna. A great advantage of the city is its location close to the eastern boarder of the European Union.

Important international transit routes meet here. Thanks to the constantly developed transport infrastructure, convenient road and rail connections with Central and Southern Poland have been established, while Lublin Airport, opened in December 2012, ensures easy access to key European cities and transport hubs: Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Oslo and Stockholm.

Due to Lublin’s geographical location and its history, KUL has strong ties both with the East and the West. It is only a stone’s throw from Lublin to such marvelous and thriving cities as Warsaw, Cracow or Lviv.

Lublin itself has nearly 337 788 residents, making it the 9th Polish city in terms of the population size. More than twice the number of residents (712,000) live in the Lublin Metropolitan Area, which is comprised of Lublin and 41 boroughs with 4 adjoining districts (Lubelski, Lubartowski, Łęczyński and Świdnicki). Thanks to the collaboration of local government bodies, the area has developed improved connections, both via the public transport network and rail routes.

Local transport:

Lublin has a good network of buses and trolleybuses which connects the city centre (where the KUL’s main building is situated) with all parts of the city. Tickets are available at newsagents’, on buses or in ticket machines (e.g. at KUL – entrance to The John Paul II Collegium). As a student, you will have discounts for short-term and long-term tickets, providing you have a valid Student Identity Card. It will be issued within the first few weeks of your stay at KUL. Keep in mind that if you don’t have a validated ticket with a Student Identity Card, you will be punished with a fine. Before you get a Student Identity Card (Legitymacja studencka), it is recommended to buy tickets without a discount.

We advise you to buy a monthly or quarterly bus pass. You can get it at the Office of Public Transport at 14 Nałęczowska Street and 5 Zielona Street or via the application Lubika: https://lubika.ztm.lublin.eu/eshop/Account/Login

We also recommend the website https://jakdojade.pl/lublin to check the routes or buses.

City Bike:

Lubelski Rower Miejski (Lublin City Bike) provides an alternative, ecological and a fast way of transport. There are about 1000 bicycles located in almost 100 stations in Lublin and Świdnik. From the beginning of April to the end of November city bikes are available on a 24/7 basis.

It is very simple and cheap. First 20 minutes are always free of charge. The only fee is the initial one, it costs 10 PLN (you can pay eg. via bank transfer). The first hour of the rental equals 1 PLN. Second - 3 PLN, third and every consecutive one - 4 PLN.

Hiring a bike - use a special terminal located next to the every bike station or scanning a quercode via application Nextbike (free to download and available for the Android, iOS and Windows users).

Returning the bike - all you need to do is to walk your bike and put it into the electric lock. Do not worry – the sound and signal indicate you have returned the bike. If there are no stationary locks available, use the cable lock provided to attach your bike to any loop on the rack or any other bicycle and then change the numbers on the lock. In such case, proceed to the terminal, press “Return” and follow the instructions on the screen.

Car and scooter sharing:

The city also offers electric scooters service with hundreds of them available for residents and tourists. As a result of the shift in people’s mobility habits towards shared solutions, private mobility service providers have also come to Lublin. In mid-2018, blinkee.city started to offer a pay-by-the-minute sharing service of 38 powered seated scooters. At the end of 2018, the carsharing system, PANEK, began to operate in Lublin (the second city after Warsaw) with a fleet of 100 hybrid vehicles. In 2019 Volt and blinkee.city broadened their offering by introducing powered seated scooters. Now, the total number of these vehicles reached around 400.

Companies such as Uber and Bolt operate in Lublin. You need to download a mobile application from Google Play or App Store in order to be able to use their services.

Bolt and Uber offers a taxi-like service among other numerous traditional taxi companies. Due to the city’s relatively limited size and density of population, an end-to-end travel in Lublin costs no more than 6-7 Euro (Bolt,Uber).

You can pick up a taxi either from a taxi rank or by calling a taxi service (e.g. (+48)814444444, 8119628, 8119621, 8119622, 8119665). Of course, tariffs vary but it can amount up to approx. PLN 20 ~ 30  within the city.
