The Ancient Quarrel Yesterday and Today: The Search for Truth in Philosophy and Literature

Jacek Woroniecki OP Memorial Lectures

May 12-17, 2014, KUL-Lublin (Poland)

(30 hours course in a week-time, 2 ECTS points)

Professor Chamberlain’s research focuses primarily on Epistemology, Metaphysics, and most recently Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Literature.  He has presented and published numerous papers and articles on these subjects.

These lectures will examine the concept of truth in relation to philosophy and literature. The issue will be approached historically by considering how the Ancient Quarrel between the Philosophers and Poets emerged and evolved in the classical interpretations of Plato and Aristotle. Next some modern interpretations (such as Nietzsche and Freud) will be considered.  Finally, it will be shown how the contemporary Thomistic account of Jacques Maritain synthesizes essential aspects of both classical and modern theories. In examining the numerous questions and issues on this topic, frequent references will be made to classical and contemporary works of literature.

From Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Classroom: GG-38
